Indonesia's Java Quake Injures Dozens, Damages Homes
The tremor registered different magnitudes depending on the monitoring source—5.8 according to the US Geological Survey (USGS), while Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded it at 6.2.
The USGS pinpointed the earthquake's origin at a depth of 58.4 kilometers beneath the ocean floor, south of Java Island. The seismic event struck shortly after 1 a.m. local time on Friday—equivalent to 1806 GMT on Thursday.
By midday Friday, damage assessments were still underway across affected areas. Erwin Andriatmoko, who leads Pacitan's disaster agency (BPBD), confirmed structural harm to at least 15 residential properties with varying levels of destruction.
"Data is still being collected from all districts," he said.
The Bantul BPBD documented more extensive impacts, identifying no fewer than 20 compromised structures and logging 36 casualties—all injured—distributed across several subdistricts within their jurisdiction.
BMKG's Earthquake and Tsunami Director Daryono provided technical analysis to reporters, explaining that the quake had a thrusting mechanism typical of subduction megathrust zones along southern Java.
The fault mechanism aligns with the tectonic behavior characteristic of Indonesia's position along the volatile Pacific Ring of Fire, where seismic activity remains a constant threat to island communities.
